Woodsboro, TX

Woodsboro is a Refugio County town five miles southwest of Refugio, at U.S. 77 and Farm to Market Road 2441. The 2020 census counted 1,319 residents. Woodsboro Independent School District serves the town, with Woodsboro High School's Eagles part of local school life. The roads lead into the farm country of southwestern Refugio County, while the oil and gas fields that followed an early twentieth-century boom remain part of the area's working history.

The town began as a 1906 land-development project by W. C. Johnson and George P. Pugh beside the St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railway. It was first called Church, then Woodsboro after Captain Tobias D. Wood sold the Bonnie View Ranch to the developers. By 1908, the town had a school, cotton gin, lumberyard, hotel, and about 25 buildings. A newspaper followed in 1910, electricity and waterworks in 1913, and incorporation in 1928 after nearby oil was discovered. Woodsboro still has the railroad-shaped grid and county-road feel of a place built to move people, crops, and later oil.
