Woodville Farm Labor Camp, CA

Woodville Farm Labor Camp is a small rural community nestled in the farmland of Tulare County, about eight miles west of Porterville and 18 miles southeast of Tulare. Home to around 700 residents, the settlement was originally established in the 1930s by the Farm Security Administration to provide stable housing for the agricultural workers tending the surrounding orchards and crops in the southern San Joaquin Valley.

The site has a deep history that includes a 1930s dedication by First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, as well as a pivotal role in California labor organizing during the 1965 Tulare County rent strikes. Today, the community along Road 192 is managed by the Tulare County Housing Authority and offers nearly 180 family homes. The grounds are shaded by mature trees and feature open grassy fields often used for neighborhood soccer games, an on-site daycare center, and essential community services, all set just south of the Tule River.

Daily life remains closely tied to the surrounding fields and local schools. Younger students attend Woodville Elementary just up the road, while high schoolers commute a short distance into Porterville. Between seasonal family programs, quiet residential lanes, and sweeping views of Central Valley farmland, Woodville stands as a distinct and close-knit pocket where farmworking heritage is woven right into the everyday routine.
