Wounded Knee, SD

Wounded Knee is a small, quiet community set among the hills of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in southwestern South Dakota. It carries deep meaning for the Oglala Lakota people and holds a prominent place in American history as the location of the 1890 Wounded Knee Massacre. Decades later, in 1973, it again became the center of national attention when American Indian Movement activists occupied the town, bringing renewed focus to Native American sovereignty and civil rights.

Day-to-day life here is centered on family, tribal traditions, and a shared connection to the surrounding land. The memorial grounds on the hill are protected as sacred territory by the Oglala and Cheyenne River Sioux tribes, serving as a quiet place of remembrance for locals and visitors alike. Down the road, the Wounded Knee District School serves neighborhood children from kindergarten through eighth grade, supported by recent investments in modernized campus buildings, roads, and housing.
