Wright-Patterson AFB, OH

Wright-Patterson AFB is a census-designated place east of Dayton, Ohio, where the Wright brothers’ early flying ground became a major Air Force research, testing, and logistics installation. In 1904 and 1905, Wilbur and Orville Wright used Huffman Prairie to develop the Flyer II and Flyer III, working out turns, circles, and figure eights after their first powered flights. From 1910 to 1916, the brothers also ran a flying school there. The military airfield grew through the neighboring fields and later combined Wright and Patterson names into the base known today.

The site’s map now mixes historic prairie, runways, laboratories, hangars, and the Dayton-area communities around it. The base carries aviation research and engineering work alongside the Air Force Museum and the heritage sites that mark the Wrights’ experiments. The local scoop is that Wright-Patterson is not just a modern military installation with an old name: its oldest chapter is the actual practice field where the Wright brothers learned how to make controlled flight repeatable.
