Wyanet, IL

Wyanet is a Bureau County village in the Ottawa micropolitan area, where the 2020 census counted 886 residents. Its history reaches back to 1821; the village was platted in 1854 and incorporated in 1857. Several names appeared along the way, while the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad helped fix the modern name as tracks were built through the area in the 1850s. The result is a compact village surrounded by north-central Illinois farm country.

Bureau Valley Community Unit School District 340 serves Wyanet, giving the village a school connection that reaches beyond its own streets. Bureau County's network also includes the Hennepin Canal corridor, railroad towns, and historic communities spread across the prairie. Wyanet's local map is easy to read: an old settlement site, a nineteenth-century rail line, a village government, and a school district linking nearby towns. The name may have changed more than once, but the village has stayed tied to the transportation and farm landscape around it.
