Wyoming, IL

Wyoming is a Stark County city whose history and present-day map meet at the former railroad depot. Gen. Samuel Thomas founded the town on May 3, 1836, and the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy depot now houses the headquarters, visitor center, and railroad museum for Rock Island Trail State Park. The trail follows an abandoned Rock Island Railroad corridor for 26 miles between Alta and Toulon, passing through prairie, tree-lined sections, streams, and the Spoon River trestle. Wyoming is the trail’s main Stark County gateway.

That rail-to-trail conversion gives Wyoming a specific role in the Peoria region. Hikers, cyclists, and skiers arrive through town on the same corridor that once carried passengers and freight, while the restored depot keeps the railroad story visible. Around the center, historic buildings and a steep pointed downtown tower serve as recognizable markers, with Thomas Park, Duryea Park, and North East Park filling out the city’s neighborhood map. The result is a small city where a nineteenth-century rail line still directs recreation, local history, and the way visitors find the town.
