Yakutat, AK

Yakutat is a census-designated place within the City and Borough of Yakutat on the Gulf of Alaska. The 2020 census counted 527 residents in the CDP. There is no road connection to the outside world; air service, the state ferry, barges, and the local harbor connect the settlement to the rest of Alaska. The airport lies about three miles southeast, and Monti Bay is the borough's only sheltered deep-water port.

Fishing and fish processing sit at the center of local work, alongside city, school, and federal land-management services. Yakutat's surrounding geography reaches from Yakutat Bay and the Situk River to Malaspina and Hubbard glaciers, with Wrangell-St. Elias and Glacier Bay lands nearby. The community's Tlingit and Eyak history remains part of the regional story, while the current town is organized around a small road system, harbor, airport, stores, and fishing access. Yakutat is compact in population and enormous in setting: a Gulf coast settlement whose everyday needs arrive by air and water, while commercial fishing and the surrounding rivers, beaches, and glaciers shape its calendar.
