Yankee Hill, CA

Yankee Hill occupies a mountain community in Butte County east of Paradise, along the Concow Road and Highway 70 corridor. Its story began with the gold rush: Rich Gulch, Spanishtown, and Yankee Hill were mining names that grew around claims and stores in the 1850s. The community later served nearby valleys with a post office, hotel, school, ranches, and small businesses, even as the first mining camps faded.

The Yankee Hill Historical Society keeps that layered history visible through its archives and the restored 1856 Messilla Valley Schoolhouse. The school was moved from Pentz to Concow Road in 2002 and now serves as a community center and society headquarters. Modern Yankee Hill is shaped by mountain roads, forest, wildfire planning, and the long Highway 70 route toward Oroville and Paradise. The older gold-country names remain in the landscape, but local institutions now revolve around preservation, community meetings, evacuation planning, and the people who maintain homes among the ridges. Yankee Hill is a place where mining history and present-day mountain stewardship occupy the same roads.
