About Yoe

Yoe grew out of two York Township farms, first taking shape as Snyderstown around Aaron Snyder's sawmill in 1871. A store and cigar factory followed in 1880, and by 1907 the borough had an astonishing 50 cigar factories turning out roughly 100,000 cigars a day. The Maryland and Pennsylvania Railroad brought a station, while a quarry, coal company, printer, and hotel filled out the little industrial center. The tracks are now part of Yoe's memory, but the borough still keeps about eight acres of parks between the baseball field and Philadelphia Street. It is a small York County place with a surprisingly smoky past.
