York, AL

York is a Sumter County city in Alabama's Black Belt, near the Mississippi line. The 2020 census counted 2,414 residents. U.S. 11 and Alabama 7 and 17 carry traffic through town, with Interstates 20 and 59 about two miles away. Sumter County schools serve York, and the Coleman Center for the Arts gives the old downtown a working arts institution through exhibitions, education, artist residencies, and community projects. Lake Louise and the city's parks add a local outdoor edge.

York grew from Old Anvil and New York Station, two settlements that merged around 1838. The railroad arrived in the 1850s, the name became York Station in 1861, and the city incorporated as York in 1881. Cotton farming, gins, and warehouses once organized the local economy; the rail line still runs through town. Today the school system, arts center, parks, and highway connections give York a role that reaches beyond its city limits. The old rail corridor and nearby interstates keep York tied to regional movement.
