Named after Greek independence hero Demetrius Ypsilanti, the city grew around early rail lines and the nation's first teacher-training school west of the Alleghenies, which eventually grew into EMU. During World War II, the nearby Willow Run plant produced B-24 bombers and put Rosie the Riveter on the national map, cementing an automotive and aviation heritage you can still explore at Depot Town's Automotive Heritage Museum.
