Yuma Proving Ground, AZ

Located about 30 miles north of downtown Yuma, Yuma Proving Ground is a massive desert military installation spanning hundreds of thousands of acres. Surrounded by rugged mountain ranges and open wilderness, it serves as a major testing ground for military vehicles, aircraft, and communications gear. The community itself is relatively remote, carved out of the Sonoran Desert to give testing crews and defense personnel plenty of open space and quiet airspace.

The site's military history dates back to World War II, when troops used the unforgiving desert to prepare for combat overseas. Ever since, the facility has taken full advantage of southern Arizona's relentless summer heat, dry air, and blowing dust to see how equipment holds up in extreme conditions. Today, those same harsh elements make it a key hub for evaluating everything from drones to parachute systems under clear desert skies.

As one of the region's largest employers, the proving ground brings a steady population of civilian engineers, technicians, and military families to the area. Base housing forms a small, quiet community with an elementary school and everyday amenities, while older students commute to schools in Yuma. Because access through the security gates is restricted, many people working at the facility choose to live in nearby Yuma or the Fortuna Foothills for more shopping, dining, and housing choices.
