About Zapata

Zapata is a census-designated place and the county seat of Zapata County, Texas, situated along Falcon Lake on the Mexican border. Named for revolutionary commander Jose Antonio de Zapata and relocated to higher ground in 1953 before the construction of Falcon Dam, the community of approximately 4,897 is served by the Zapata County Independent School District.
