Zarephath, NJ

Zarephath is a quiet, historic enclave in Somerset County nestled between the Millstone River and the Delaware and Raritan Canal. Established in 1908 by the Pillar of Fire church, the area served for generations as a hub for religious schooling and campus life. While its institutional footprint has changed over the years, the community maintains a peaceful, small-town atmosphere surrounded by green space and water.

Being bordered by two waterways gives Zarephath plenty of charm, along with real flood risks during major storms. Severe flooding from Hurricane Irene in 2011 reshaped the neighborhood, prompting college facilities to relocate and spurring new levee protections. Today, the Delaware and Raritan Canal towpath provides an easy route for walking, running, and cycling right past the historic bridgetender station. It remains a tranquil corner of Franklin Township where local history and outdoor recreation are part of everyday life.
