Zwolle, LA

Zwolle is a Sabine Parish town in western Louisiana near the Toledo Bend country, with a name that points back to the Netherlands and a story rooted in older Native and Spanish influences. The town was established along the Kansas City Southern Railway in the 1890s, and the bowl-shaped land around the settlement offered shelter from storms. Rail, timber, farming, and parish roads helped Zwolle become a service center for the surrounding communities.

The Zwolle Tamale Fiesta is the town's signature gathering, founded in 1975 and now held at the Zwolle Festival Grounds. Tamales, music, a parade, cultural exhibits, pageants, a trail ride, and the mud bog give the October weekend a distinctly local shape. Main Street and the railway corridor still organize the town, while Sabine Parish roads lead toward Many, the reservoir, and the Texas line. Zwolle carries several traditions at once: a railroad town, a forest-and-farm community, and a place where food keeps the history in motion.
