Abanda, AL

Abanda is a census-designated place and unincorporated community in Chambers County, Alabama, in the county's northwest. Its name came from the Atlanta, Birmingham and Atlantic Railroad: when the line reached this point, the new settlement took the initials AB&A and became Abanda. A post office operated here from 1908 until 1956 or 1957, and the 2020 census counted 133 residents. Those dates give the place a concise railroad history, with the post office marking the period when Abanda functioned as a named station community.

Today Abanda has no incorporated town government and remains part of the rural landscape around Chambers County's larger municipalities. The county school district includes Abanda in its service area and lists schools in LaFayette, Fairfax, Huguley, and Valley. Chambers County's broader history is tied to railroad connections, textile manufacturing, and mill towns, with LaFayette as the county seat and the Chambers County Museum as a historical institution. Abanda's local map is correspondingly small: a community name, a former post office, and a railroad abbreviation that still tells you how the settlement began.
