About Ada
Ada is Norman County's seat, a northwest Minnesota city that got its first real push from grain and a post office. William Shields arrived in 1876, built a grain warehouse, and began buying from area farmers; when the post office moved in, the settlement took the name Ada, honoring Ada Nelson Fisher, daughter of local farmer H. W. Fisher. Ada was laid out in 1874, grew into a town in 1890, and became a city in 1908. Highways 9 and 200 cross town, and the Norman County Fair arrives each June. The local shorthand is county seat, grain, and a fair weekend that fills the calendar.
