Adelino, NM

Adelino is a Valencia County community on the east side of the Rio Grande, south of Tome and within the irrigated farm country of New Mexico's Rio Abajo. It became its own census-designated place in 2010 after belonging to the larger Tome-Adelino designation. The landscape is the real first impression: flat fields, acequia-fed agriculture, and the long north-south road connection toward Belen and Albuquerque. Corn, chile, and alfalfa fit the valley as naturally as adobe walls do.

The Miguel E. Baca House gives Adelino a strong piece of nineteenth-century character. Built around 1895, the adobe building served as Baca's residence and business headquarters, with a store, saloon, and dance hall tied to the property. Belen Consolidated Schools serves the community, with Belen High School as the district's comprehensive high school. Belen supplies everyday services, while Tome and the Rio Grande valley keep the local map close. Adelino's local scoop is the combination of working farmland and one unusually substantial adobe landmark: a place that looks at road level like a rural neighborhood, but carries the memory of a merchant's home, store, and gathering place.
