About Agency

Agency is a Buchanan County village laid out in 1865, but the name reaches back before the town itself: the site was a ford of the Platte River and later held an agency for the Sac and Fox. A post office has operated here since 1872, giving the place an older continuity than its size suggests. Today Agency sits in the St. Joseph orbit, but its local story is still river crossing, frontier outpost, and a name that remembers what came before the village.
