Aitkin, MN

Aitkin is the Aitkin County seat, a city of 2,168 residents in the 2020 census where the Ripple River meets the Mississippi River country. Before the city took shape, a trading community called Lexington sat near the river mouth; the Northern Pacific Railroad reached the area in 1870 and helped establish Aitkin as the county's main town. That combination of river, railroad, logging, and county government still shapes the local map better than population alone. Aitkin City Park sits in the middle of town along the Ripple River, with ball fields, a skate park, disc golf, pickleball, a playground, a hockey rink, and walking paths.

The 1916 Northern Pacific Depot now houses the Aitkin County Depot Museum, where exhibits cover riverboating, railroads, logging, Native history, agriculture, and other pieces of the county story.
