Akron's story began along the Ohio and Erie Canal, where a steep climb up local hills once required a rapid series of canal locks. Known everywhere as the Rubber City, Akron expanded rapidly in the early twentieth century as the manufacturing hub for tire giants like Goodyear and Firestone. While the heavy factory era has passed, that manufacturing legacy evolved into a modern economy centered on polymer science and advanced materials. Goodyear still maintains its global headquarters in town, and the University of Akron drives innovative research, supporting a steady local job market across engineering, chemistry, and corporate operations.
