Alamo, GA

Alamo is Wheeler County’s seat in south-central Georgia, a town that began as a Seaboard Air Line Railroad stop in 1890. The 2020 census counted 771 residents. It was named for the Alamo mission in San Antonio and incorporated in 1909; the town’s courthouse arrived in 1917 after an earlier building burned. U.S. 280 and Georgia 126 meet here, with the Oconee River and Little Ocmulgee State Park shaping the larger county setting.

The county-seat role gives Alamo a civic center, while the railroad accounts for the town’s original placement. Wheeler County schools run from pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade, and the Lamplighter Little Theatre carries a bit of the town’s older cultural history from 1919. Alamo is a place with a very Georgia combination of ingredients: sandy soil, a courthouse town center, a rail line in the origin story, and river country that opens out beyond the city limits. The town is small enough for the courthouse and school to remain easy reference points, but its roads tie it to the wider coastal plain.
