Albany actually owes its existence to an argument over garbage. Back in 1908, local residents voted to incorporate as a city specifically to stop neighboring Berkeley from dumping trash on their land. A year later, they renamed the town after the New York birthplace of their first mayor. Today, this compact, one-square-mile town sits between Berkeley and El Cerrito, offering a friendly small-town feel right in the East Bay. Solano Avenue is the center of the neighborhood, lined with independent bookstores, bakeries, cafes, and family-owned restaurants that stretch toward the Berkeley hills, while San Pablo Avenue handles grocery runs and regional transit.

Over on the west side, a mix of research and student housing gives Albany a surprisingly international flavor. UC Berkeley's University Village sits here, providing apartments, playgrounds, and community gardens for graduate students and their families. Right next door, federal scientists at the USDA Western Regional Research Center quietly work on food safety and sustainable agriculture. Between these university families, the research campus, and Albany's top-tier public schools, the town has a strong, education-focused community feel.

Down by the water, the shoreline has become one of the most distinctive recreation spots in the area. The Albany Bulb, once a construction landfill, is now a beloved open space famous for dog-friendly trails, quirky driftwood art, and panoramic views of the San Francisco skyline and the Golden Gate Bridge. It links directly into the Eastshore State Park trail system for miles of bayfront walking and biking. Just to the south, the historic Golden Gate Fields racetrack closed in 2024, setting the stage for future efforts to turn that prime waterfront land into an even larger park.

Local events also bring neighbors together throughout the year. Every September, the massive Solano Stroll closes the avenue to cars, filling the street with food vendors, live music, and family activities. In the summer, residents head over to Memorial Park on Wednesday evenings with picnic blankets for outdoor concerts. Because the town is so compact and flat, getting around is simple. A quick walk or bike ride down Buchanan Street takes you from the shops on Solano straight out to the breezy shoreline trails in just a few minutes.
