Albany, MO

Albany is Gentry County’s seat in northwest Missouri, centered where U.S. 136 meets Route 85. It was laid out in 1845 as Athens and took the Albany name in 1857, a transfer from the New York city that a local judge called home. The courthouse square still gives town the feel of a county seat, with government offices and older buildings gathered close together. The Gentry County Courthouse and Albany Carnegie Public Library are among the places that preserve that older civic map, while Town Branch crosses the southern part of town on its way toward the East Fork of the Grand River.

Albany’s daily rhythm is practical and compact. Route 136 carries the east-west trips, Route 85 points north and south, and Albany R-III keeps the schools rooted in town. The population is under two thousand, but the city serves as Gentry County’s main gathering point for errands, government, and school events.
