Algonquin is a Dorchester County census-designated place pressed against Cambridge, with the tidal Choptank River forming its northern edge. The 2020 census counted 1,220 residents. The community’s name refers to the Algonquin peoples of the Eastern Shore, including the Choptank and Nanticoke, whose lives were tied to the river through fishing, crabbing, hunting, and farming.
