Aliceville, AL

Aliceville is a Pickens County city that began around John Taylor Cochrane’s short-line railroad. Cochrane built the line and its station, bought the town site in 1902, laid out streets and lots, and named the place for his wife, Alyce Searcy Cochrane. The town incorporated in 1907. During World War II, Camp Aliceville held German prisoners of war; today the Aliceville POW Museum keeps that difficult chapter in the local record. Aliceville is a railroad town whose name came from a marriage, then acquired a much heavier history.
