About Allensworth

Allensworth is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Tulare County, California. Founded in 1908 by Colonel Allen Allensworth, it is historic as the first town in California to be founded, financed, and governed by African-Americans. Today, the original townsite is preserved as Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park, which hosts seasonal events. The community of four hundred residents features the Allensworth School and marks the eastern shoreline of historic Tulare Lake.
