Allgood, AL

Allgood sits just south of Oneonta in Blount County's Murphree Valley, with Straight Mountain rising to the southeast and Red Mountain and Sand Mountain to the northwest. The 2020 census counted 548 residents. State Highway 75 runs north-south through town, connecting the local crossroads to Oneonta and Birmingham. The older name, Chepultepec, came from soldiers who saw the surrounding hills as a reminder of Chapultepec in Mexico.

In 1915, the post office became Allgood after local officials and a lime-business owner sought a name customers could spell; the town incorporated in 1959. Lime shaped the working map for decades. A spur from the L&N Railroad carried lime to wider markets, and the depot handled farm products, fertilizer, cement, eggs, and cotton. The tracks and station are gone, while the old and new Highway 75 corridors carry the traffic. The former Presbyterian church now serves as Town Hall, and the fire department and remaining businesses sit between the two highway alignments, keeping the older crossroads visible in the present town.
