About Allison

Allison is the Butler County seat, a city of 966 residents in the 2020 census. The town took its name from U.S. Senator William B. Allison in 1881, when the Dubuque and Dakota Railroad reached the area and the county seat moved here from Butler Center. The courthouse on Sixth Street gives Allison a county-wide role, with farm roads and county offices drawing people in from across the surrounding fields.

The Butler County Fair has been held at three county locations since it began in 1856, and its current fairgrounds are in Allison. Fair week brings livestock, 4-H projects, rides, and grandstand shows to Main Street. North Butler Community School District formed in 2011 through the merger of the Greene and Allison-Bristow districts. Its elementary campus is in Allison, while the junior-senior high school is in Greene. Courthouse, fairgrounds, school, and rail history give this small Iowa city a practical center and a calendar that reaches well beyond its own blocks.
