Alpaugh, CA

Alpaugh is a Tulare County census-designated place on the historic shoreline of Tulare Lake in California's southern San Joaquin Valley. The town was named for John Alpaugh, one of the Home Extension Colony officers who helped reclaim the land. That placement matters: Alpaugh once stood on or near an island at the south end of the lake, in a landscape of tule marshes, ferry routes, fish, and migratory birds. The lake last filled and overflowed toward the San Joaquin River in 1878, and the town now sits amid the agricultural grid that replaced the old water world.

Alpaugh Unified School District is part of the community's civic map, and Tulare County's planning documents identify Alpaugh as a designated community in the county's 2030 plan. Roads run past fields and irrigation works toward Allensworth, Kettleman City, and the rest of the Central Valley. The place keeps a strong sense of the vanished lake beneath its modern layout: the name, the flat horizon, and the old shoreline all point to a town built where water once shaped everything.
