About Alpine Village
Alpine Village is a small census-designated community in Alpine County's eastern Sierra country, near Woodfords and about six miles north-northwest of Markleeville. The county's mountain roads connect the community with Carson Valley in Nevada and with the high passes, ranches, and public lands around Highway 88. Woodfords traces its non-Native settlement history to Brannan Springs and the emigrant road west, while Markleeville carries the county-seat role.
Alpine County's small population and large distances shape everyday life. Many homes across the county are seasonal or recreational properties, while permanent residents rely on Markleeville, Woodfords, and Nevada for groceries, health care, schools, and other services. The surrounding valleys support hiking, fishing, camping, cycling, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and ranch work as the seasons change. Alpine Village does not have a conventional downtown; its character comes from the road, the mountain weather, and the network of nearby communities that share one county. It is a high-country place where the landscape is part of the daily commute.
