Altamahaw, NC

Altamahaw is an Alamance County community north of Burlington, reached off N.C. 87 and shaped by the Haw River. Its name is tied to the Altamahaw Cotton Mill, started in 1878 by John Q. Gant and Berry Davidson. It began as a yarn mill, moved into cotton cloth by 1887, and grew into the sort of mill village that gave the river towns their working geography. The Altamahaw Mill Office, a surviving piece of that operation, was listed on the National Register in 1984.

Altamahaw and nearby Ossipee once appeared together as a single census-designated place; after Ossipee incorporated in 2002, the remaining territory kept the Altamahaw name. Burlington supplies larger jobs, stores, and services, while roads around the Haw River still lead past old textile-country landmarks. Alamance County's broader mill story runs through plaids, spinning, weaving, and the long transition away from water-powered industry. Altamahaw's local scoop is that its place-name sounds rural and small, but it comes from a serious textile operation that once counted thousands of spindles and dozens of looms.
