Elon is the classic picture of a small college town, where the boundaries between the university and the community are practically invisible. The town started in the nineteenth century as a simple railroad stop called Mill Point, serving nearby textile mills. When local leaders helped establish a new college in a grove of native oaks in 1889, the community grew up alongside it. The bond between the school and the town only deepened over the years, especially after a devastating fire destroyed the main campus building in 1923 and prompted a swift rebuilding effort that produced landmarks like Alamance Building and Whitley Auditorium. Even their identities stayed in lockstep; both were known as Elon College until dropping "College" from their official names in the early 2000s. Today, that shared history shows in the town's classic architecture, rich tree canopies, and close-knit feel.

Having a university in your neighborhood brings plenty of everyday perks for year-round residents. The campus is a designated botanical garden, giving locals miles of scenic paths for morning walks and dog strolls under the oaks. From spring through fall, the weekly farmers market at Elon Community Church draws neighbors together for fresh produce, baked goods, and crafts. For bigger shopping trips, healthcare systems, and broader dining options, Burlington and Gibsonville sit right next door, giving you the charm of a picturesque small town with larger amenities just down the road.
