Alton, MO

Alton is the Oregon County seat in southern Missouri, a small city near the center of the county and Piney Township. The town was platted in 1859 after William Hodges deeded land for the new county-seat site; a post office followed in 1862. Its name came from Alton, Illinois, likely through first postmaster William C. Boyd, who had ties to that city. County roads connect Alton with the Ozark farms, forests, and communities around Oregon County.

County government gives Alton a daily role beyond its city limits. The courthouse, sheriff, schools, and Alton Branch Library serve residents from across the county, while Alton R-IV operates elementary and high school campuses. The county seat also brings court dates, school events, and county errands into the same small center. The surrounding region includes large stretches of Mark Twain National Forest, so the city sits at the meeting point of public business, school life, and wooded Ozark country. Alton feels like a county-seat town in the old-fashioned sense: the place where many rural roads eventually lead.
