Alton, NH

Alton is the primary settlement within the Town of Alton, centered at the junction of New Hampshire Routes 11 and 140 just south of Lake Winnipesaukee. It is a census-designated place, but the name sits inside a larger town landscape that includes Alton Bay, forests, mountains, and the Merrymeeting River. Mount Major and Alton Bay State Forest give the area its outdoor edges, while the roads meet in the village center and carry traffic toward the Lakes Region.

Alton’s early name, New Durham Gore, pointed to the rocky uplands around the settlement. Farming shaped the first chapter; tourism became more important in the nineteenth century, especially around Alton Bay. The bay’s camp meeting began in 1863, and by 1900 thousands of worshipers were arriving each summer. Fire destroyed much of the campground in 1945, after which it was rebuilt with a less crowded layout. Alton is therefore both a crossroads and a resort gateway, with everyday town services on one side and the lake’s long history of seasonal gatherings on the other.
