Altona, NY

Altona is a Clinton County town in New York’s North Country, about ten miles south of the Canadian border and twelve miles west of Chazy. The Great Chazy River drains most of the town, while the Little Chazy River and Corbeau Creek carry water from the southeast toward Lake Champlain. The western edge reaches the Adirondack region, giving Altona a mix of farm country, forest, and long northern roads.

Altona’s human history predates the town’s formation. Archaeological work records St. Lawrence Iroquoian fortified villages in the area by around 1300 CE, and the town was formed from part of Chazy in 1857. Lewis Preserve keeps another layer visible, with abandoned farm fields, second-growth forest, Civil War-era charcoal-kiln remains, old apple trees, and a homestead foundation. Farm roads, rural schools, and the border country around Lake Champlain fill out the present-day setting. Altona’s local map is broad and rural, but the river valleys and preserved traces give it a deep timeline.
