Alvan (Alvin), IL

Alvan, usually written Alvin on the post office and village website, is a Vermilion County village in South Ross Township about fifteen miles north of Danville. It is a small prairie railroad place, and the two spellings are part of the local identity rather than a mistake to erase. The first settlement was Gilbert, begun in 1872 near the Chicago and Eastern Illinois Railroad and named for Alvan Gilbert. When the Havana, Rantoul and Eastern Railroad crossed the C&EI in 1875, the newer settlement at the junction became Alvan and Alvin while the older Gilbert faded. The post office settled on Alvin, while the Census and some railroad-era references kept Alvan alive.

The tracks show why the village exists where it does. Chicago Street, Railroad Avenue, the post office, Christian churches, local parks, and the surrounding farm roads make up the everyday map. Barlow Park once brought visitors by train for boating, baseball, band concerts, cottages, and a water slide along the river; the park closed in 1920, but its story still gives the tiny crossroads more personality than a generic farm stop. Today Alvin is part of the Danville area while keeping a distinctly rural village scale.
