About Amalga

Amalga is a Cache County town whose name comes from the Amalgamated Sugar Company, a clue to the older industry that shaped northern Cache Valley. Hans Jorgensen settled the area in 1869, and a sugar-beet refinery followed around the turn of the century. When that business faded, the former refinery found a second life as a cheese plant during the World War II dairy boom. Schreiber Foods still operates in town, so Amalga’s local story runs from beet sugar to cheese, with dairy farms filling in the space between.
