Amasa, MI

Amasa is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Iron County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The 2020 census counted 195 residents. The community is located within Hematite Township. Matthew Gibson and his son J. That mix gives Amasa a clear local shape within Michigan, with older layers still visible in current places. The local scoop is a place whose streets, landmarks, and institutions keep its earlier story close to the present. Thoburn Gibson discovered iron croppings along the shores of the Hemlock River in 1888, and the Hemlock River Mining Company took over the area two years later when sufficient amounts of iron were found. The Hemlock River, which is a tributary of Paint River, flows through Amasa. Amasa includes the Hemlock River.
