Americus, KS

Americus is a Lyon County city northwest of Emporia, laid out in 1857 and named for Amerigo Vespucci. The town company hoped it would become the county seat, and the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad later made Americus a station and shipping point. Today the city opens into Flint Hills prairie and farm country, with Emporia close enough for larger errands while Americus keeps its own small-town street grid. Gravel cycling has added a newer reason to pass through: some Unbound Gravel routes use the city as a waypoint.

North Lyon County USD 251 has its district office in Americus and connects the city with Admire, Allen, Bushong, Miller, Reading, and surrounding rural communities. City Hall, the library, fire service, recreation organization, and church gatherings fill out the local calendar. School buses, farm traffic, and cyclists all move along the same open country roads that once fed the rail stop. Americus is a Kansas place where a 1857 town plan, a rail-era shipping stop, a school district headquarters, and modern gravel roads still fit together.
