About Amherst

Amherst is a city in Lorain County, Ohio, located twenty-eight miles west of Cleveland and five miles south of Lake Erie. Founded by pioneer settler Jacob Shupe and platted in 1836 as Amherst Corners, the historic community has a population of approximately 12,900. Renowned for its historic sandstone quarries, which once drove the local economy, the city offers a classic suburban environment within the Cleveland metropolitan area.
