Where the Black River reaches Lake Erie, two Lorain waterfront sites serve as public gathering places. Black River Landing is both a park and a major outdoor event ground. When no event is underway, it opens from dawn to 11 p.m. with walking paths and river access. Nearly every Friday from Memorial Day through Labor Day, the site hosts Rockin' on the River concerts. On concert nights, the port authority's free water taxi repeats a route among Black River Landing, Oasis Marinas at Port Lorain, and Lorain Brewing Company. The Lorain International Festival also uses the landing for its three-day bazaar. In 2026, the festival marked its 58th year with cultural performances, food and craft booths, a princess pageant, sacred-music program, and downtown parade. West along the shore, the county-run portion of Lakeview Park covers 20 acres. Its public beach supports swimming and paddling, while the bathhouse, summer concession, beach-volleyball courts, lawn-bowling court, playground, shelters, and gazebo broaden the park's use.

The historic rose garden arranges about 2,500 roses in 48 beds shaped like the Rotary wheel. For 2020-2024, the median owner-occupied value was $139,200 and median gross rent was $887; 57 percent of occupied homes were owner-occupied, and owners with a mortgage had median monthly costs of $1,218. Away from the waterfront, the operating 1928 Palace Theatre continues to schedule concerts, plays, and community events. As of July 2026, the Lorain Public Library's Main Library stays open six days a week and adds a Create Space with a CNC mill, laser cutter, 3D printer and scanner, embroidery and sewing machines, Cricut, heat press, and other equipment alongside meeting rooms, job-seeker help, genealogy resources, and a culinary-literacy center.
