About Amsterdam

Amsterdam is a city in Montgomery County, New York, situated along the Mohawk River, which forms part of the historic Erie Canal corridor. Named after Amsterdam in the Netherlands, the community of approximately 18,000 first developed in the early eighteenth century as settlers established farms in the Mohawk Valley. The area's history is shaped by figures including Sir William Johnson, who established Fort Johnson nearby before founding the city of Johnstown.
