Anderson, NJ

Anderson is a Warren County census-designated place within Mansfield Township, a small New Jersey settlement whose history is built from a mill, a store, and a few family businesses rather than a municipal downtown. It began as Andersontown after Joseph Anderson settled there in 1787. Anderson owned much of the surrounding land, built a hotel in 1795, and operated a distillery through his descendants until 1852. William Little built a gristmill in 1798, a general store opened in 1825, and Anderson once had its own post office.

That is enough to picture the older place: grain arriving at the mill, travelers stopping at the hotel, local goods moving through the store, and neighbors collecting mail without heading to a larger town. Today Anderson is folded into township life rather than standing as an incorporated village.
