About Andover

At Crosstown Boulevard and Hanson Boulevard, Andover groups City Hall, public works, water treatment, the Senior Center, and the Andover Community Center/YMCA on one municipal campus. That civic center and the city's recreation system now matter more to its physical identity than the small railroad station that supplied its name. The Great Northern Railway's first train passed the future community on July 4, 1899, and the station was named Andover; local government arrived much later, with Andover Village established in 1972 and fourth-class city status in 1974. Outdoor space is distributed broadly rather than confined to that civic campus. The city maintains more than 67 parks and 41 miles of paths and trails. Four nature preserves, acquired after voters approved a $2 million bond in 2006, protect mature deciduous woods, wetlands, and prairie while allowing trail access.

More than 400 acres of Bunker Hills Regional Park lie in Andover, placing a water park, golf course, campground, dog park, and trails for hiking, biking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing close to city neighborhoods. The Community Center supplies a public indoor counterpart: the city operates its ice arena, field house, sports complex, and walking track, while the YMCA portion contains aquatics and fitness facilities. Andover households can claim 15 activity passes and unlimited walking-track use through the city's 2026 resident package. Summer activity returns to the municipal campus for the volunteer-run Andover Family Fun Fest, which marked its 30th year in 2026 with a parade, 5K, street dance, craft show, children's activities, food, live music, and fireworks.
