Angustura, NM

Angustura is an unincorporated San Juan County community on the northern New Mexico side of the Bloomfield area. The 2020 census counted 1,407 residents. It sits between Bloomfield and Blanco, with the San Juan River forming its southern border; U.S. 64 runs through the CDP and links the area west toward Bloomfield and Farmington. That makes Angustura a place defined by edges and connections: a river below, Bloomfield’s city services to the west, and the long highway line carrying people across the basin.

Bloomfield Schools serve the area, with Bloomfield High School the local high school. The broader river corridor ties Angustura to the everyday geography of northern San Juan County—farming, energy work, fishing, river parks, and access to Navajo Lake. Angustura does not have a separate downtown or town government, so its sense of place comes from the school district, the river, the highway, and the homes spread between its neighboring communities. It is small on paper but connected to a regional center, the kind of New Mexico place where the road and river do more organizing than a town square.
