Apex earned its name as the highest point along the historic Chatham Railroad, inspiring the town's long-running motto, "The Peak of Good Living." While trains originally stopped here for water and timber, the heart of the community grew along Salem Street. After fires swept through the wooden downtown in the early 1900s, local shopkeepers rebuilt with the red-brick storefronts you see today.
