About Appling

Appling is Columbia County’s seat, a community whose civic status has changed more than once. It began as Columbia Courthouse, received a town charter in 1816, and was renamed for Colonel Daniel Appling after his death in 1817. Appling later lost its city charter in 1995, after Georgia required incorporated cities to provide at least three municipal services. Today the place is a CDP in the Augusta area, with U.S. 221 and Kiokee Creek marking the map. Appling is a Georgia county seat with an old courthouse name, a soldier’s name, and a town government that took a different form.
