Arcadia, MO

Arcadia is an Iron County city in the Arcadia Valley of southeastern Missouri, a small community shaped by the surrounding hills and the roads that run through the region. It was laid out and platted in 1849, and its name came from Arcadia, the Greek region celebrated in classical writing as a pastoral country. The 2020 census counted 618 residents. That pairing of a nineteenth-century town plan and a borrowed classical name gives Arcadia a distinctive beginning: a Missouri settlement deliberately placed within a landscape its founders associated with an older idea of rural life.

Arcadia’s present-day scale is modest, but its location places it within Iron County’s long history of settlement, schools, mining, and movement through the Ozarks. The city’s streets and nearby highways serve residents who live among the valley’s wooded slopes and open stretches. Arcadia is near the other communities that share the valley, yet it keeps its own name and municipal center. The 1849 plat still matters because it marks the moment a place on the map became a town, while the name preserves the imaginative link its founders made between Missouri and ancient Greece.
