Argenta, MT

Tucked along Rattlesnake Creek about 15 miles northwest of Dillon, Argenta is a quiet rural community with deep roots in Montana's frontier history. Originally established in 1865 as Montana City, it was soon renamed Argenta after the rich silver deposits discovered in the surrounding hills. During the late 1860s, the town briefly surged with over a thousand residents, local hotels, and one of the earliest operating smelters in Montana Territory.

After the early mining booms wound down, Argenta settled into a relaxed rhythm in the foothills of the Pioneer Mountains. Today, the area attracts people who appreciate scenic mountain views, historic character, and easy access to the surrounding Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest. A maintained gravel road winds past the old townsite and climbs over the divide toward Birch Creek, creating a convenient gateway to backcountry trails and outdoor recreation while keeping Dillon’s shops and schools close at hand.
